Every month I read advice from an ex-FAANG (*), who just had a session with someone currently working in FAANG and feels obliged to tell you that portfolio projects are useless.
I can't agree more.
If you are currently working in FAANG and want to change companies for some reason, most probably all you need is a career coach and some quiet time to reflect on your journey so far.
For the rest of us, especially for people in the beginning of their career or career changers, working at the places where they can't exercise hard-skills in a meaningful way, personal projects is the best way to level up. To get the most out of it do projects:
1. In the domain, which is interesting for you to learn more about this field
2. For non-profit organizations around you (if you're in Germany: Verein next-door might be a golden mine of interesting use-cases!)
3. Creating value for you or/and your family and friends
4. Contributing to open-source
Working on a portfolio is boring, but solving a problem is exciting. Keep this in mind ;)
