5 things to help your transition from academia to private sector as a researcher

  • Your research topic may have been fascinating, but finding jobs closely related to it can be challenging. Focus on the skills you've developed during your research journey rather than the specific topic. These skills are adaptable and valuable in various roles that require creative and knowledge-based expertise.

  • It's essential to articulate your previous experience (e.g. research topic and methodologies) in simple terms. The specialized language of your research is akin to work jargon, and when aiming for roles in non-research organizations, clarity in communication is key (ChatGPT/Perplexity can be a useful tool for this!).

  • For those from the Humanities or Social Sciences, look for companies that emphasize being 'customer-centric/driven.' The field of Design often offers opportunities for scholars to leverage their skills, but there are also other industries where your problem-solving abilities will be in demand.

  • Remember to put all cumulated experience under separate sections when creating your CV. Have you been a visiting scholar? Put it as a separate job experience. Working in journals or editing books? A separate job experience. Teaching alongside your research? You know the drill.

  • Familiarize yourself with business research terminology. Understand the nuances between tactical, operative, and strategic research, and how they apply in a business context.
